I’d been experiencing a clunking in the front right, mostly while turning sharply left. There was another rattle that had been bugging me for a while but this clunk seemed to be related to the sway bar end links which I’d replace with some aftermarket Moogs when I did the lower control arm bushings.
I’d just taken a look a couple months back but hadn’t seen anything obvious.

Today I saw clear evidence of a CV boot failure. Black grease had been slung everywhere.
I’d rebooted the driver side nearly 3 years ago but didn’t do the passenger side as it wasn’t giving me any issues and appeared to be aftermarket, unlike the driver side.
I decided to save the reboot kit for the OEM side and swap the bad axle with a new aftermarket unit.
I rolled out of bed today and enjoyed some coffee and ice cream while refreshing my memory watching Timmy’s CV Axle video before getting to work.

What went wrong? I was having a hell of a time getting the new axle into the differential. I asked Henry to give me a hand and with the very next attempt it went right in. Thanks buddy.
Much to surprise, I noticed during the test drive that the clunk I’d attributed to the end links and the mystery rattle seemed to be gone. Not a bad deal for $143.52. Went with Autozone instead of NAPA because NAPA couldn’t get me the axle until next week and the pictures on both sites were identical (for whatever that’s worth). I’m not usually a fan of parts that come with lifetime warranties but in this case it was a no-brainer.
